U.S. sanctions not to be impediment to Syria’s future – State Sec.
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Tuesday that American sanctions will not stand in the way of Syria’s future, following President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order lifting most sanctions on the country.
In a post on “X”, Rubio wrote, “In accordance with @POTUS’s Executive Order ‘Providing for the Revocation of Syria Sanctions,’ the U.S. is taking further actions to support a Syria that is stable, unified, and at peace with itself and its neighbors.”
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order officially ending the majority of sanctions on Syria, while maintaining targeted measures against Bashar al-Assad, his close associates, human rights violators, drug traffickers, individuals connected to chemical weapons activities, members of the Islamic State (ISIS) and its affiliates, and Iranian operatives.
He emphasized that “U.S. sanctions will not be an impediment to Syria’s future.”
According to the U.S. Treasury Department’s statement accompanying the order, the United States remains committed to “supporting a Syria that is stable, unified, and at peace with itself and its neighbors. A united Syria that does not offer a safe haven for terrorist organizations and ensures the security of its religious and ethnic minorities will support regional security and prosperity.”
