KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Kobani University, in the city of Kobani in northern Syria, announced the opening of its new Faculty of Social Sciences for the upcoming 2025–2026 academic year, aiming to train researchers and educators to serve both the city and surrounding areas, university officials said on Sunday.
Ridwan Mohammed Ali, a member of the preparatory committee and head of the Social Sciences Department at Kobani University, told North Press that the new faculty will offer a four-year program and will be open to students who have completed secondary education in either the scientific or literary tracks, in accordance with the curriculum of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).
The faculty will comprise five departments: Philosophy, Sociology, Jineology (Women’s Studies), History, and Geography.
Students will follow a “shared college system” in which they take common foundational courses during the first two years before selecting a specialization in their third year.
Mohammed Ali explained that the primary goal of the faculty is to train researchers capable of addressing social issues through scientific methods and to offer professional social and psychological counseling services to the community.
It also seeks to help meet the pressing demand for social science teachers in local schools.
Currently, around 1,500 students are enrolled at Kobani University. With the launch of these new departments, the university aims to meet institutional and societal needs, expand employment opportunities for young people, and accommodate approximately 2,000 students in the coming academic year, according to previous university statements.
