Damascus Education, UNICEF continue joint assessment of school needs

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Damascus Education Directorate, in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is continuing efforts to assess the needs of schools across the Syrian capital as part of ongoing collaboration between the Syrian education sector and international partners.

The assessment process covers a wide range of priorities, including infrastructure conditions, student and teacher needs, and identifying key areas for improving the overall learning environment.

According to the state-run SANA news agency, Director of Education in Damascus, Ghassan al-Lahham, accompanied by a UNICEF team, visited a school as part of a field tour aimed at evaluating its status across various domains. The visit was part of a pilot phase using a new school needs assessment form.

Al-Lahham emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing cooperation with UNICEF to ensure a better educational environment for all students. He stressed the need for careful follow-up on the results of the assessment to accurately compare current conditions with actual needs, ultimately informing a strategic action plan to improve all facets of education in Damascus schools.

In a related development, the Ministry of Education held discussions with UNICEF engineers in May to explore areas of cooperation in designing new school buildings that adhere to international standards, while continuing to refine procedures related to school needs assessments.
