Preparations for Syrian parliamentary elections underway

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, head of Syrian People’s Assembly High Elections Commission, stated on Sunday that the commission is interested in holding consultations in northeastern Syria.

Al-Ahmad noted that the consultations depend on the flexibility of negotiations with the delegation mandated by the state.

Speaking to North Press, al-Ahmad explained that the proposed timeline for organizing parliamentary elections is between two to three months.

“The estimated duration of the upcoming parliamentary term is expected to be around five years,” he added.

Commission member, Lara Izouqi, also confirmed to North Press that the election timeline ranges from 60 to 90 days.

“We have already begun our provincial visits, starting today with the Damascus city, Rif Dimashq, and Quneitra,” she said. “We will continue to visit other governorates in the coming days.”

Izouqi emphasized that the commission will be holding meetings with political bodies, governors, and local residents in each governorate.

“These sessions aim to gather input, discuss priorities, and share the commission’s vision. We will return to review and integrate the suggestions into our work,” she explained.

She further noted that the commission is committed to ensuring no less than 20 percent female representation in the upcoming parliament.

“We are working to establish mechanisms for meaningful collaboration and to gather proposals that promote active and genuine representation of women,” she said.
