Over 100,000 tons of wheat received in NE Syria amid low yields

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – A senior official from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced on Tuesday that more than 100,000 tons of wheat had been received by grain centers as of June 15.

Grain collection centers across Northeast Syria’s region began receiving this season’s wheat harvest several days ago, despite a noticeable decline in production caused by erratic weather patterns and limited rainfall.

Jwan Mohammed Hassan, co-chair of the Silos and Mills Committee of the AANES, told North Press that 105,605 tons of wheat had been received by June 15.

He added that the wheat is being received at 17 designated centers spread across the region.

Hassan noted that the silos are prepared to receive up to 400,000 tons of bulk (unbagged) wheat, and up to 500,000 tons of bagged wheat.

“It’s difficult to provide an exact estimate, as yields vary significantly from one area to another this season,” Hassan noted. “In many regions, production is lower than expected.”

He affirmed that all wheat delivered by farmers during the current harvest season will be accepted, and that the collection centers will remain open until every last quantity is received.
