First meeting between AANES and Syrian government focuses on education

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A negotiator from the delegation of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) told North Press on Sunday that the first round of talks with the Syrian transitional government in Damascus focused on the education file.

“The first day of discussions concluded with an agreement to form two joint committees to resolve the issue of administering national high school and middle school exams in areas under the AANES,” the source said.

Both sides reportedly explored mechanisms to allow students in AANES territories to take official examinations based on the Syrian national curriculum—a longstanding point of contention that has affected thousands of students’ access to higher education.

On Saturday, a delegation from the AANES arrived in Damascus to meet with representatives of the Syrian transitional government.

The talks are intended to address the implementation of the political agreement signed between Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Yasser Suleiman, spokesperson for the AANES delegation posted on X platform that the first round of negotiations was friendly and constructive, emphasizing a shared interest in building mutual understanding.
