Erdogan says SDF stalling implementation of agreement with Damascus
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Thursday that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are employing delaying tactics in implementing the agreement signed between Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa and SDF Commander in Chief Mazloum Abdi.
Speaking to reporters during his return flight from Azerbaijan, Erdogan said that there are no issues hindering the peace process in Turkey, adding that developments are proceeding positively.
However, he emphasized that the SDF must stop stalling and begin implementing the agreement, including its integration into the Syrian state.
Erdogan added that Turkey is closely monitoring developments in northern Syria as part of its national security framework.
It is essential that the agreement between the SDF and Damascus be implemented within the agreed and scheduled timeframe, he asserted.
On May 24, the Syrian Presidency announced that al-Sharaa met with U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, in Istanbul to discuss a range of critical issues, including the implementation of a comprehensive agreement with the SDF.
Following the meeting, the Syrian Presidency released a statement affirming that both al-Sharaa and Barrack agreed on the necessity of fully implementing the agreement. The statement stressed the importance of restoring the Syrian government’s sovereignty over all national territory and outlined mechanisms for integrating the SDF into state institutions.
