UN reaffirms support for Syrian institutions toward political transition
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, reaffirmed on Wednesday the UN’s commitment to supporting Syrian state institutions in achieving a meaningful and sustainable political transition, following a series of meetings with Syrian ministers in Damascus.
In a series of posts on “X”, Pedersen stated, “Beneficial meeting in Damascus w/Minister of Justice Mazhar al-Weis. We discussed the importance of judicial reform in Syria.”
Pedersen noted that al-Weis outlined the efforts being undertaken in the area of judicial reform, acknowledged the existing challenges, and underscored the need for continued support from the United Nations and international partners.
The U.N. envoy also met with Interior Minister Anas Khattab, describing their talks as constructive. “Constructive meeting w/Interior Minister Anas Khattab to discuss security sector reforms & recent organizational restructuring within the Ministry.”
He emphasized that “Safety & security are essential for a smooth, inclusive political transition in Syria.”
Pedersen further described his meeting with Education Minister Mohammad Abdul Rahman Tarko as “Insightful engagement” highlighting the importance of education in shaping Syria’s future.
“Syrian youth deserve nothing less than access to quality education & the opportunity to shape a better future,” he said.
He concluded by stressing the need for sustained international engagement, stating, “Strong international support, including from the UN family, should continue.
