AANES may hold exams independently amid silence of transitional government

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – An official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said on Wednesday that they will have conduct exams of the Syrian transitional government’s curriculum independently, if Damascus continues to ignore preliminary agreements reached between the two sides.

Samira Haj Ali, co-chair of Education Board of the AANES, told North Press that during discussions, an initial understanding was reached allowing students to take national exams within AANES areas, with provisions for forming joint committees and streamlining the registration process.

The AANES held formal meetings with the Syrian Ministry of Education on April 13 and 14, both in person and online, Haj Ali added.

Haj Ali noted that the AANES has already begun opening registration centers, coordinated with UNICEF, and held meetings with relevant executive bodies—including the Interior and Health departments—to develop a comprehensive plan ensuring exams are conducted in a safe and organized environment.

However, she noted that the Ministry of Education of the transitional government has yet to issue an official statement confirming the agreement.

She pointed out that if the current ambiguity persists, the AANES may proceed with organizing the exams independently, issuing its own certificates, and enabling students to register in universities across northeastern Syria.

Haj Ali emphasized that discussions are ongoing to determine the exam implementation mechanism, should the AANES be forced to act unilaterally.
