Landmine blast kills man, injures 2 family members in Syria’s Homs
HOMS, Syria (North Press) – One person was killed and two others injured on Sunday when a landmine, a remnant of war, exploded as their vehicle passed through the al-Bayarat area in the eastern countryside of Homs, central Syria.
A medical source at the al-Qaryatayn city hospital told North Press that 19-year-old Marai al-Arandas died instantly in the explosion. His brother, Muhammad, and Muhammad’s wife, Fatima, sustained varying injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.
A source from the General Security forces said the explosion occurred while the family was traveling along a dirt road in an area previously used for military operations.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern across Syria, where unexploded ordnance and landmines left behind from years of conflict continue to pose a deadly threat—particularly in rural areas lacking coordinated mine clearance programs.
Human rights and humanitarian organizations report that war remnants have killed or injured thousands of civilians, including women and children, since the start of the Syrian conflict. There are growing calls for intensified demining efforts and expanded public awareness campaigns to reduce the risks faced by local communities.
