QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday that they had killed a member of an Islamic State (ISIS) cell while foiling a planned attack on military positions in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
In a statement, the SDF said, “Our forces, with support from local residents, thwarted an ISIS plot targeting our forces in the town of Darnach, Deir Ezzor’s eastern countryside.”
The statement added that SDF fighters had received intelligence from local sources regarding suspicious activity in the area.
“Our units responded swiftly and surrounded the area. The terrorist cell opened fire and our forces responded.”
According to the statement, the clash resulted in the death of one militant, while another fled. A subsequent combing operation was launched in search of the remaining militants.
The SDF noted that ISIS cells continue to pose a threat in the region, actively attempting to target its forces through the use of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), particularly in areas with significant SDF activity and movement.
This incident follows another failed ISIS attack that the SDF said it thwarted on Friday evening in the same region.
