Pedersen discusses NE Syria with transitional government FM
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced on Saturday that he had discussed the situation in northeastern Syria with Asaad al-Shaibani, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Syrian transitional government.
In a post on his X platform account, Pedersen wrote that he had a productive meeting with Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani, where they discussed the political transition process.
In a statement last week, Pedersen noted that the agreement between the Syrian transitional government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) presents an opportunity to address the northeastern Syria file constructively.
He added that their discussions also covered the upcoming formation of the People’s Council, international engagement, developments in the northeast, and recent events in coastal regions and Suwayda, along with other key aspects of the Syrian situation.
It remains essential for the political process to be inclusive and transparent, ensuring meaningful participation from all segments of society, especially the effective representation of women, Pedersen said.
The UN envoy also emphasized the importance of continued robust support from the international community and regional stakeholders to advance the political process in Syria.
