Dozens of displaced families from Deir ez-Zor depart camp in NE Syria

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of displaced families from Deir ez-Zor left on Sunday the al-Arisha camp in the countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, marking the latest group to return to their areas of origin.

According to the camp administration, 53 families—comprising a total of 283 individuals—departed the camp. All of them are originally from the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, west of the Euphrates River.

Salwa Jajo, co-chair of the al-Arisha camp, told North Press that this movement represents the fifth organized departure facilitated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as part of its voluntary return program.

“Since its establishment, al-Arisha camp has hosted around 14,000 displaced individuals. Today, the number has dropped to approximately 11,000,” Jajo stated.

She also noted that the UNHCR is preparing to organize upcoming returns for displaced people from Homs and other Syrian governorates currently residing in the camp.

Jajo added that approximately 200 additional families have registered with the UNHCR and are ready to leave in future batches.

The camp administration confirmed that the next group of returnees is scheduled to depart this coming Thursday.
