U.S. Congressman calls for renewed engagement with Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman said on Sunday that as Syria enters a new phase under its transitional leadership, the United States should actively pursue engagement with the country.

In a post on “X” platform, Stutzman stated that such engagement is essential “Not only to help Syria prosper, but also to weaken the influence of Russia and China.”

He emphasized that fostering ties with Damascus would help establish “another ally and trade partner in the region.”

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria during his visit to Riyadh—his first tour of the Gulf region since taking office.

Stutzman had previously visited Damascus, where he met with Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s Transitional President.

At the time he said that upon returning to the U.S., he intends to share the positive and constructive meetings he held with the Syrian leadership, underscoring that it is important for the United States to have not only an ally, but a friendly leader in Syria.
