U.S. welcomes PKK decision to dissolve, end armed struggle
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States welcomes the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) recent decision to dissolve its organizational structure and end its decades-long armed campaign, a U.S. State Department official told North Press on Wednesday.
“We also welcome the recent announcement from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on its intent to disband,” the State Department official said.
“It is the United States’ hope that this announcement will lead to increased stability for the region.”
On Monday, the PKK issued the concluding statement of its 12th Party Congress, held from May 5–7, which included a landmark decision to disband its organizational framework and formally end armed struggle.
The latest peace initiative was launched late 2024 by Devlet Bahçeli, leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). In February, PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan delivered a speech—described by observers as “historic”—in which he declared his support for the peace process and urged the party to disband.
