UN says over one million Syrians return home amid ongoing displacement
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations said on Friday that more than one million Syrians have returned to their areas of origin since November 2024, even as internal displacement continues across the country.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 1.07 million people have returned to their home areas between November 2024 and May 2025, while more than 670,000 others were newly displaced within Syria during the same period.
OCHA’s report highlighted that approximately 462,000 of those who returned had been internally displaced prior to Nov. 27, 2024.
The report also noted that departures from displacement camps remain limited, with roughly 333,000 individuals having left camps in northwestern Syria since December.
In April, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that 400,000 Syrian refugees had returned from neighboring countries, in addition to more than one million internally displaced persons who had gone back to their homes since the fall of the Syrian regime on Dec. 8, 2024.
Earlier, in March, UNHCR stated that around one million displaced Syrians were planning to return to their areas of origin in the coming year.
