Syrian president’s visit to France seen as diplomatic turning point
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese political analyst Salam Abdelsamad described on Wednesday the visit of Syria’s Transitional President, Ahmad al-Sharaa, to France as a “significant political milestone.”
The visit, Abdelsamad noted, carries important diplomatic and strategic implications.
Speaking to North Press, Abdelsamad emphasized that the visit conveys several positive messages. Chief among them is “France’s recognition— as a global power—of the importance of al-Sharaa’s leadership in Syria.”
The Paris-based analyst added that the reactivation of sovereign institutions in Syria is strengthening its position on the international stage. Through this visit, France appears to be sending a clear signal of its acknowledgment and support for Syria’s transitional path.
Abdelsamad suggested that the visit could open new avenues for bilateral cooperation, including legal and diplomatic consultation in support of Syria’s recovery.
“Syria today needs stability and a fresh re-engagement with the world,” Abdelsamad concluded. “We always welcome cooperation between nations—especially between a sisterly Arab country like Syria and France.”
On Tuesday, AFP reported—citing sources at the Élysée Palace—that al-Sharaa was scheduled to arrive in France the following day, in what is seen as a rare international engagement by the Syrian transitional leadership.
