Syria’s al-Sharaa to visit France in first official trip to Europe

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa is scheduled to visit France on Wednesday, marking the first official visit by a Syrian president to Europe, AFP reported on Tuesday, citing sources at the Élysée Palace.

According to AFP, the Élysée stated that President Macron will receive al-Sharaa and reaffirm France’s support for building a new Syria—one that is free, stable, sovereign, and inclusive of all components of Syrian society.

Earlier in February, Macron extended an invitation to al-Sharaa. However, by the end of March, the invitation was made conditional on the formation of a Syrian government that includes all components of civil society and provides guarantees for the safe return of Syrian refugees.

The Élysée added that the meeting is part of France’s long-standing commitment to the Syrian people and their aspirations for peace and democracy.

Macron is also expected to reiterate key demands for the Syrian government, including regional stability—particularly in Lebanon—and the need for continued efforts to combat terrorism.

The semi-official newspaper al-Watan, citing the Syrian Presidency’s media office, also confirmed the upcoming visit.
