Pedersen condemns Israeli strikes in Syria, calls for immediate halt
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The U.N. Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, condemned on Saturday what he described as Israel’s continued violations of Syrian sovereignty and called for an immediate end to the attacks.
In a statement on X platform, Pedersen urged Israel to cease military actions that risk civilian lives and to fully adhere to international law. He emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and independence.
The condemnation follows a series of Israeli airstrikes on Friday targeting military sites across Syria, including areas near the presidential palace in Damascus.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the strikes. His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, reiterated the UN’s position, stating the Secretary-General strongly condemns Israel’s violations of Syria’s sovereignty, including the airstrikes near the presidential palace in Damascus. He added that it is crucial these attacks stop and that international norms and Syrian sovereignty be upheld.
