Protest in Syria’s Suwayda demands protection after attacks on towns

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – The city of Suwayda, southern Syria, witnessed on Thursday a protest condemning recent attacks on the towns of Sawra al-Kubra and the village of Knaker.

A local source said that the protest was organized by the Suwayda Chamber of Commerce and Industry alongside several civil activists, in response to what they described as “unjustified aggression” against civilian areas.

On Wednesday, the two towns—located in the northern and southern countryside of Suwayda—were targeted by mortar shelling and heavy machine-gun fire, resulting in one injury and significant material damage.

A number of activists also joined the protest, calling for urgent international protection and immediate intervention to halt the violence.

Earlier in the day, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Suwayda, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, reiterated the call for international protection, describing it as a legitimate right for a people who have endured massacres and systematic marginalization.
