Calm returns to Druze areas in Damascus following deadly clashes

DAMASCUS, Syrian (North Press) – Relative calm returned on Thursday to the town of Ashrafiyat Sahnaya and the city of Jaramana in Damascus countryside, following two days of violent unrest and armed clashes that left dozens dead and injured.

On Wednesday, the Syrian transitional government announced it had reached an agreement with Druze community leaders and elders concerning the recent events in both Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya.

Details of the agreement have not been made public, but it comes amid heightened concerns over escalating violence and instability in these areas.

Rif Dimashq Governor Ammar al-Sheikh, during a press conference attended by North Press on Wednesday evening, commented on the recent unrest in Jaramana and Sahnaya in the south Damascus. He emphasized, “Weapons must be exclusively in the hands of the state to preserve civil peace.”

While calm has been restored in parts of the Damascus suburbs, the situation remains volatile in the western countryside of Suwayda.

According to Suwayda 24, a local news website, local sources confirmed that “local factions successfully repelled an assault by armed groups on the village of Kanaker in the west of Suwayda and managed to push them back.”
