Clashes continue in Damascus suburbs amid widening security tensions
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Armed clashes continued on Wednesday in the towns of Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya in the Damascus countryside, following escalating tensions that first broke out early Tuesday in the nearby city of Jaramana, which has a predominantly Druze population.
According to a statement by the Syrian Ministry of Interior, the violence in Jaramana erupted between rival armed groups, resulting in multiple casualties, including members of the local security forces.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the General Security authorities imposed an overnight curfew in Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya.
Local sources told North Press that clashes have persisted in both towns since late Tuesday evening and continued through Wednesday.
The armed confrontations have involved light and medium weaponry, prompting the deployment of additional military units by security forces in an attempt to restore order, according to the sources.
Amid the ongoing violence, the Druze-led Men of Dignity Movement issued a statement mourning the death of one of its members, Wajdi al-Hajj Ali, who was reportedly killed during the fighting.
As of the time of publication, the Syrian Ministry of Interior has yet to issue an official statement regarding the security developments in Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya.
