Landmine blast in Deir ez-Zor claims young man’s life
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A young man was killed and another injured on Sunday following the explosion of a landmine left over from previous conflicts near the banks of the Euphrates River in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
According to a local source, the landmine detonated as two young men approached the river in the town of al-Majawda, east of Deir ez-Zor, while attempting to install a water pump for irrigation purposes.
The explosion resulted in the killing of Asmar al-Madhahi and caused minor injuries to his cousin.
This incident marks the first recorded landmine explosion along this stretch of the Euphrates, the source said, suggesting that the mine may have been planted by Iranian-backed militias during their previous control of the area to prevent access to their military positions.
