Syria’s al-Sharaa calls for review of U.S. sanctions conditions

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa revealed on Wednesday the existence of ongoing agreements with Russia, while noting that certain U.S. conditions for lifting sanctions on Syria require further dialogue and possible revision.

In an interview with The New York Times, al-Sharaa emphasized the broader implications of instability in Syria, stating that any chaos in Syria will affect the entire world, not just neighboring countries.

He added that both regional and European nations have a vested interest in ensuring the stability of Syria following the fall of the al-Assad regime.

Addressing the issue of foreign military presence in Syria, al-Sharaa said they have made it clear to all parties that any military presence must comply with Syrian laws. No foreign force should use Syrian territory as a platform to threaten other countries, he said.

He confirmed that Syria has maintained long-standing food and energy agreements with Russia, underscoring the importance of honoring those interests.

He noted that they have not yet received any offers from countries willing to replace their existing weaponry, most of which is Russian-made.

Al-Sharaa also affirmed his government’s commitment to restoring peace in the Syrian coast and pledged to hold accountable those responsible for acts of violence.

Calling on Washington to lift the sanctions imposed in response to crimes committed by the previous regime, he said that some American conditions for lifting sanctions need to be reviewed or amended.

He concluded by acknowledging the challenges ahead, noting that a few months are not enough to build a national army for a country the size of Syria.
