UNHCR says over 50,000 Syrian refugees voluntarily return from Jordan
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that more than 50,000 Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned from Jordan to Syria since the fall of the al-Assad regime, a Jordanian news TV channel said on Tuesday.
According to data reported by the Jordanian television channel Al-Mamlaka, 54 percent of the returnees were complete families, totaling 29,924 individuals, while the remaining 46 percent—or 25,808 people—returned as part of partial family units.
The report also indicated that only 17 percent of the returnees had been living in refugee camps, whereas the majority—83 percent—had been residing in urban areas. Returnees were spread across several regions in Syria.
Daraa Governorate in southern Syria was the top destination for returning refugees, receiving 19,221 individuals. It was followed by Homs with 13,441 returnees, the Damascus countryside with 6,904, Damascus itself with 2,955, and Aleppo with 2,547.
