Syria says meeting with U.S. Congressman part of efforts to end isolation

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that the recent meeting between Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Congressman Cory Mills is part of broader efforts to break Syria’s diplomatic isolation and strengthen its regional and international standing.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the discussions covered the latest security and economic developments in Syria, as well as the potential for building a strategic partnership between Damascus and Washington based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Earlier on Saturday, two members of the U.S. Congress held talks in Damascus with Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s Transitional President, as part of their official visit to the Syrian capital.

Both parties also addressed key regional threats, particularly the activities of cross-border militias, drug trafficking networks, and organized crime. The ministry emphasized the importance of international coordination to confront these challenges within a framework that respects international law and state sovereignty.

The meeting also included a discussion on U.S. sanctions imposed on Syria, with Syrian officials highlighting their detrimental effects on essential sectors such as health, education, and energy.

Al-Shaibani reiterated the call for lifting these “illegal” measures, stressing that doing so would help restore trust and pave the way for meaningful cooperation between the two nations.

According to media reports, the U.S. government has issued travel visas to a Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister al-Shaibani, who is expected to visit Washington in the near future.
