U.S. issues highest-level travel warning for Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Department of State issued on Friday a stark warning to American citizens, advising against all travel to Syria due to credible threats of potential attacks.

In a statement published on the official website of the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, the Department stated it is “tracking credible information related to potential imminent attacks, including locations frequented by tourists.”

As a result, the State Department has issued a Level 4 travel advisory for Syria—the highest level in the U.S. travel advisory system—which translates to “Do Not Travel.”

The warning emphasized that “No part of Syria should be considered safe from violence,” and that the travel advisory remains in full effect.

The statement also noted that the U.S. Embassy in Damascus remains closed and is unable to provide consular services. American citizens in Syria requiring emergency assistance are urged to contact the U.S. Interests Section at the Czech Embassy.

The advisory warned that terrorists “may conduct attacks with little or no warning, targeting public events, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping malls, public transportation systems and areas where large crowds gather.”

Separately, The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the administration of President Donald Trump threatened to adopt a tougher stance against the Syrian transitional government if it failed to comply with U.S. demands.
