Yemen to reopen embassy in Damascus following regime change in Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Yemeni Foreign Minister Shaya al-Zindani announced on Tuesday that preparations are underway to reopen Yemen’s embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, in the near future.

Speaking to Okaz, a Saudi newspaper, al-Zindani stated that contact was established with Syrian authorities following the fall of the former Syrian regime on Dec. 8, paving the way to reclaim Yemen’s diplomatic premises in Damascus.

“I have been in communication with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani regarding the dispatch of a Yemeni delegation to Damascus on either the 21st or 23rd of this month,” al-Zandani added.

Yemen closed its embassy in Damascus in 2011, following a broader international diplomatic withdrawal in response to the actions of the previous Syrian regime.

The planned reopening signals a significant step toward the normalization of relations between the two countries.
