U.N. official warns U.S. food aid cuts to Syria risks millions of lives
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, Najat Rochdi, warned on Tuesday that the suspension of U.S. food aid to Syria could have catastrophic consequences, stressing that millions of Syrian lives are at stake.
In a statement posted on X platform, Rochdi urged the international community to act immediately.
“WFP warns it could be a death sentence for millions already facing extreme hunger,” she said.
Rochdi emphasized that nearly 1.5 million Syrians—still recovering from over a decade of war and unrest—now face the loss of essential food assistance. She added “50,000 women/children will be cut off from life-saving nutrition support, threatening health, recovery/ survival.”
“This is not just a humanitarian crisis,” she continued. “It’s a destabilizing blow to a fragile region.”
“At a time when Syrians need global solidarity more than ever, these cuts will deepen suffering and fuel instability.”
