U.N. affirms Syrian mission’s status unchanged after U.S. decision

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed on Monday that the status of the Syrian mission to the U.N. remains unchanged and that Syria’s membership in the organization continues unaffected.

Speaking to the Kurdish news outlet Rudaw on Monday, Dujarric said Syria’s status at the United Nations remains unchanged.

On April 6, the U.S. delivered a memorandum to the Syrian mission—via the United Nations—stating that its legal designation would shift from that of a permanent mission of a recognized member state to that of a mission representing a government not recognized by the United States.

He clarified that Syria’s U.N. membership is governed by international law and that the recognition of governments is a matter determined by individual states.

Dujarric also emphasized that the host country’s decision to alter the visa status of Syrian mission members does not impact Syria’s representation at the United Nations or its ability to participate in the organization’s proceedings.
