IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Security forces in the city of Maarat al-Numan, northwestern Syria, launched a security operation Tuesday targeting individuals accused of collaboration with the former Assad regime in Jabal al-Zawiya, south of Idlib.
A security official, speaking to North Press on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the campaign focused on the towns of Jozef and Benin, leading to the arrest of eight individuals. According to the official, the detainees were described as former government personnel and military elements who had refused to settle their status through government-established reconciliation centers.
The source stated that security forces recovered light and medium weaponry from those arrested, alleging that these individuals were involved in destabilizing the region. “These operations aim to ensure stability in the area by neutralizing threats linked to the former Syrian government,” the security official said.
The operation comes amid heightened security measures in southern Idlib. Reinforcements were reportedly deployed after two members of the local defense forces were killed on a road between Maarat Harma and al-Habit last week.
This is not the first such operation in the region. On March 24, the Idlib security administration conducted a similar raid in Khan Sheikhoun and Jisr al-Shughour, resulting in the arrest of at least 12 individuals on charges of espionage or affiliation with Damascus.
