U.S. lawmakers urge review, easing of sanctions on Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and Republican Representative Joe Wilson urged on Friday the U.S. Congress and the Secretary of State and Treasury to reassess and ease sanctions on Syria.

In a joint letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent, the lawmakers warned that existing sanctions could undermine Syria’s path to stability, trigger new waves of migration, and reinforce reliance on illicit trade routes.

They also cautioned that restricting reconstruction efforts could create opportunities for Iran and Russia to reassert their influence in the country.

The letter further emphasized the need to update outdated sanctions, calling for the repeal or replacement of broad measures such as the sweeping ban on services, investments, and other nationwide restrictions.

Warren and Wilson argued that comprehensive restrictions imposed more than a decade ago—targeting a regime that no longer exists—now risk undermining U.S. national security objectives and obstructing Syria’s reconstruction.
