Kurdish agreement with Damascus step toward unified Syria – German FM

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated on Thursday that the recent agreement between the Syrian administration and Kurds signals that a unified Syria could become a reality.

During her visit to Damascus, Baerbock emphasized that the “historic agreement with the Kurds in northeastern Syria shows that a unified Syria can indeed be achieved.”

She further noted that “foreign intervention in Syria has only brought chaos in the past, and Syria’s future must be determined by its people through their own sovereign decision.”

Baerbock urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid undermining internal reconciliation efforts, stressing that “reconciliation in Syria is now urgently needed to turn people’s hopes and expectations into reality.”

She also acknowledged the challenges ahead for the Syrian Caretaker Government, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, and underlined the importance of effective transitional justice and accountability for crimes committed by the Assad regime.
