Germany reopens embassy in Syria after 13-year closure
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German Special Envoy to Syria, Stefan Schneck, announced on Thursday the official reopening of the German Embassy in Syria, marking the end of a 13-year closure.
In a post in Arabic on “X” platform, Schneck stated that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock formally reopened the embassy.
He wrote that they are pleased to work closely with all Syrians for a better Syria, while noting that due to limited staff, visa and consular services will continue to be handled from Beirut for the time being.
According to Agence France-Presse, Baerbock is visiting Damascus today for the second time since the fall of the previous regime.
The German Press Agency reported that Baerbock will engage in talks with the transitional authorities and meet with representatives of civil society. However, details of the visit were initially withheld for security reasons.
Baerbock is accompanied by Armin Laschet, a member of parliament from the Christian Democratic Union, the agency added.
