Syria’s Kurdish Authority Accuses Guarantor States of Ignoring Turkish Violations After Deadly Drone Strike

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) accused guarantor states of turning a blind eye to Turkey’s repeated attacks on northern Syria, following a drone strike that killed nine civilians in the village of Qumji, south of Kobani, late Sunday night.

The attack, which targeted a single family, claimed the lives of women and children, leaving two survivors—a young girl and a woman—who were injured in the strike.

Farhan Haji Issa, co-chair of the Executive Council of the Euphrates Region, condemned the incident as a “horrific massacre,” calling it a war crime. He urged international guarantors, particularly Russia and the U.S., to take immediate action to prevent further Turkish aggression.

“This was a deliberate attack on civilians, an atrocity against a family of 11, most of whom were children,” Haji Issa stated. He called on the international community to hold Turkey accountable and to curb violations committed by Turkish-backed factions in northern Syria.

The strike came just days before Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, which is considered a symbol of freedom and coexistence in the region. Haji Issa recalled how past Syrian governments had suppressed Newroz celebrations, drawing parallels to the current threats faced by the Kurdish population.

“Despite this massacre, the people of the region remain determined to light the Newroz flame, a symbol of resistance, unity, and shared existence among the peoples of the Middle East,” he added.

Haji Issa stressed that the people of northeast Syria had hoped for fundamental changes in Syria’s political landscape, particularly regarding minority rights, following the fall of the previous regime. However, he argued that the region continues to face threats, daily bombardments, and attacks targeting both civilians and public infrastructure.

AANES officials reiterated their call for diplomatic dialogue to resolve outstanding issues and to establish a pluralistic, democratic Syria that guarantees the rights of all communities.

As tensions escalate, the attack has renewed fears of further Turkish operations in the region, raising concerns about the long-term stability of northern Syria.
