LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – More than 8,000 people from Syria’s Alawite community have taken refuge at Russia’s Hmeimim Airbase in Latakia following recent clashes in the coastal region, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The violence, which erupted in several areas, resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced civilians seeking safety.

On Monday, the director of Jableh district, accompanied by local security officials, visited the Russian military base to meet with displaced civilians. According to the Syrian state-run SANA news agency, the visit aimed to reassure them of ongoing security efforts to stabilize the region and encourage those affected to return to their homes.

SANA reported that officials briefed residents on the steps being taken to restore order, prevent further violence, and ensure basic services in affected areas. The meeting at Hmeimim was part of a broader effort by the Syrian government to address concerns over lingering security threats in coastal villages.

While state officials have urged displaced families to return, the volatile situation in parts of the coastal region has left many hesitant. Clashes between armed factions and attacks on security positions have created uncertainty, prompting Russia to reinforce its presence in the area.

Hmeimim Airbase, Russia’s largest military installation in Syria, has played a pivotal role in Moscow’s operations in the country. Beyond serving as a strategic hub for Russian air operations, it has also become a temporary refuge for civilians during periods of unrest.

The recent violence in the coastal provinces has drawn attention to the fragile security situation, with concerns over further escalations. While government efforts to restore order continue, the future of the displaced remains uncertain, particularly as fears of renewed conflict persist.
