Druze leader in Suwayda stresses rejection of constitutional declaration
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Hikmat al-Hajri, leader of the Druze community in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, reaffirmed on Saturday his rejection of the constitutional declaration.
Al-Hajri received delegations in the town of Qanawat in Suwayda to discuss the latest developments in Syria, particularly the constitutional declaration.
During the meeting, al-Hajri described the constitutional declaration as “illogical” and emphasized that the Druze people are advocates of peace.
The attending delegations voiced strong opposition, arguing that it consolidates power in the hands of a few and marginalizes various communities within the country.
The delegations also reiterated their support for al-Hajri’s stance against any agreement with the Syrian government, which they characterized as a “one-color government” that excludes diverse political and social representation.
Last week, in response to the constitutional declaration for the transitional phase, al-Hajri stated firmly that “there is no agreement or accord with the government in Damascus.”
Suwayda remains divided between those advocating for engagement with the government and those who reject any collaboration, citing the government’s lack of legitimacy.
