Russia Shelters 8,000 Syrians at Hmeimim Airbase Amid Coastal Violence

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Russia announced on Thursday that it has provided refuge for 8,000 Syrians at its Hmeimim Airbase in Latakia, following violent clashes in Syria’s coastal region. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, described the situation as a humanitarian crisis, condemning the violence and civilian casualties.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic events in Syria. The loss of innocent lives is unacceptable, and violence against civilians cannot be justified under any circumstances,” Zakharova said in a press briefing. She added that Moscow expects those responsible to be held accountable.
The recent surge in violence erupted last Thursday, when intense clashes broke out between Syrian security forces and armed groups accused of links to the previous government. The fighting, which resulted in hundreds of casualties, has further destabilized a region already grappling with economic hardship and security tensions.
While the full details of the conflict remain unclear, reports suggest that both state-affiliated forces and rival factions engaged in heavy combat, leading to widespread displacement. The situation prompted Moscow to extend support to civilians seeking refuge.
According to Zakharova, Russian forces at Hmeimim Airbase have received more than 8,000 displaced Syrians, most of whom are women and children. “The Russian military has provided shelter and humanitarian assistance to those affected,” she stated.
Zakharova emphasized Russia’s stance on maintaining stability in Syria and called on the current authorities in Damascus to fulfill their responsibility in protecting all Syrian citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic affiliation.
“We believe that the current leadership in Damascus understands its duty to protect the legitimate rights of all citizens,” she said. The Russian government, she added, is closely monitoring efforts to restore security and order in the region.
The Syrian government has yet to release an official statement on the displacement crisis, but reports indicate that security forces are attempting to reassert control over affected areas. Syrian officials have reiterated their commitment to national unity while acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
The recent violence in the coastal region raises concerns about Syria’s broader stability, as clashes between different factions continue to challenge state authority. The displacement of thousands to Hmeimim highlights the ongoing humanitarian struggles in the country, with many areas still suffering from post-conflict instability.
Meanwhile, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has expressed concerns about escalating violence across the country. Officials in northeast Syria have consistently advocated for a decentralized solution to Syria’s crisis, warning that further military confrontations will only deepen the country’s divisions.
As the situation unfolds, international observers are calling for de-escalation and accountability for civilian casualties. With tensions running high, the next steps taken by Damascus and its allies will be crucial in determining the region’s future stability.
