EU Calls for Transparent Investigation into Syrian Coastal Violence

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The European Union (EU) on Wednesday called on Syrian authorities to conduct a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation into recent violence in Syria’s coastal region, stressing the need for accountability for those responsible for crimes against civilians.

In an official statement, the EU welcomed the Syrian government’s commitment to forming an investigative committee regarding the events in the coastal region. The bloc emphasized that accountability is essential to preventing further violations and ensuring justice for victims.

The call for an investigation follows reports of widespread violence in the coastal areas over the past days, which have led to numerous casualties, including civilians. The EU expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation and condemned what it described as grave violations of human rights.

The EU statement specifically condemned attacks by pro-government armed groups on local security forces and civilians. It highlighted reports of extrajudicial executions and other violent acts allegedly committed by militias supporting government forces.

“The European Union firmly denounces the brutal attacks targeting civilians and security personnel. Those responsible must be held accountable through an independent and fair judicial process,” the statement read.

The EU urged all parties to refrain from further escalation and to commit to de-escalation efforts to prevent further civilian suffering. It also reiterated its broader call for an end to violence across Syria, emphasizing the need for a political solution in line with UN-led peace efforts.

In a separate development, the EU welcomed the agreement reached on March 10 between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The statement described the agreement as a positive step toward ensuring stability in Syria, particularly in the country’s northeast.

The EU encouraged both parties to work toward implementing the agreement effectively, noting that stability in SDF-controlled areas contributes to broader regional security. The bloc reaffirmed its full support for efforts that promote political dialogue and cooperation in Syria.

The latest developments come amid ongoing international scrutiny over human rights conditions in Syria, as well as renewed diplomatic discussions on the country’s future. Observers say that while the EU’s statement signals growing pressure on Damascus, it remains unclear whether Syrian authorities will conduct an independent investigation into the coastal region’s events.
