QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani held a phone conversation on Wednesday with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi, discussing the latest political developments in Syria following the landmark agreement between the SDF and the Syrian government.
The call comes at a pivotal moment after the recent deal, which aims to integrate the SDF into Syria’s state institutions. The agreement has been widely viewed as a historic shift in Syria’s political landscape, with implications for governance and regional security.
According to Kurdish media sources, Abdi provided Barzani with details about his recent visit to Damascus and the understandings reached with the Syrian government. The two leaders emphasized the need to support any initiative that promotes peace and stability in Syria.
The discussion also reinforced the importance of Kurdish unity in future political negotiations, a key issue amid ongoing international and regional involvement in Syria’s crisis.
This follows a previous in-person meeting between Barzani and Abdi in mid-January at Barzani’s residence in Salahaddin, Erbil. During that meeting, they addressed both Syrian and broader Kurdish political concerns.
The agreement between the SDF and Damascus has drawn attention from regional and international actors, with UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen welcoming the deal as a step toward a broader political transition in line with UN Resolution 2254.
The coming weeks are expected to test the durability of the agreement and the response from regional stakeholders, particularly Turkey, which has long opposed any formal recognition of the AANES.
As discussions continue, both Kurdish leaders stressed the need for a unified stance to navigate Syria’s evolving political landscape.
