Clashes erupt in Aleppo after attack on Kurdish security forces
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Militants from factions that recently joined the Ministry of Defense under Syria’s caretaker government targeted on Sunday a vehicle in a Kurdish-majority neighborhood in Aleppo, northwestern Syria, triggering clashes and resulting in casualties.
According to local sources, the attackers—believed to be affiliated with the government’s security forces—struck a vehicle belonging to the Kurdish-led Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood.
The attack led to intermittent clashes between both sides, causing injuries. The Asayish forces reportedly managed to capture the attackers, the sources added.
Commenting on the incident, Defense Ministry spokesperson Hassan Abdelghani stated that “The ministry’s units repelled an attack by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Ashrafiyeh, Aleppo, inflicting losses on the attacking groups.”
As of now, neither the SDF nor the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud host thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Afrin, who were forced to flee their homes following Turkey’s 2018 military offensive, “Operation Olive Branch,” alongside its affiliated armed factions. These neighborhoods remain under the control of the AANES and its security wing, the Asayish.
