DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian security forces concluded a two-day security campaign in the city of Al-Sanamayn, northern Daraa, on Thursday, securing the last known stronghold of an armed group led by Mohsen al-Himid.

The operation, carried out by the Ministry of Defense and Internal Security Forces, resulted in at least ten casualties, including members of the General Security forces. Despite the heavy clashes, sources report that al-Himid and his fighters managed to escape to an undisclosed location, leaving the operation’s ultimate objectives unfulfilled.

A local source told North Press that while security personnel swept through Al-Sanamayn’s western district—previously used as the group’s headquarters—no trace of al-Himid was found. “The area was thoroughly searched, but he and his men had already fled,” the source confirmed.

The group had reportedly planted explosives in several homes before retreating, posing additional risks to returning residents. Authorities have since begun dismantling these devices, ensuring the safety of civilians before allowing them to return to their homes.

Following the end of hostilities, life in Al-Sanamayn is slowly returning to normal. Shops have reopened, and residents are cautiously resuming daily activities after two days of lockdown. However, concerns remain over the whereabouts of al-Himid’s fighters and the potential for renewed violence.

Daraa province, often referred to as the “cradle of the Syrian uprising,” has witnessed continued instability even after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The province remains plagued by factional violence, assassinations, and the presence of various armed groups, complicating efforts to establish long-term stability.

Local officials have reiterated their commitment to restoring order but acknowledge that eliminating remaining militant cells will require sustained operations and intelligence efforts.

With al-Himid and his group still at large, security forces are expected to intensify their search operations in surrounding areas. Meanwhile, efforts to demine residential neighborhoods and rebuild trust between local authorities and residents will be crucial in ensuring long-term peace in Al-Sanamayn.
