Human rights report uncovers mass graves linked to Mezzeh military airbase

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A human rights report released on Friday revealed that over a thousand Syrians perished while detained at the Mezzeh military airbase on the outskirts of Damascus. Many were either executed or succumbed to torture and abuse at a site notorious for instilling widespread fear.

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre, which conducted the investigation, reported the identification of at least seven mass graves. The findings were based on a combination of witness testimonies, satellite imagery, and documents photographed at the Mezzeh military airbase after the fall of the al-Assad regime.

The report indicated that some suspected burial sites are within the airbase grounds, while others are scattered across various locations around Damascus.

On Feb. 25, the Syrian Civil Defense teams, known as the “White Helmets,” discovered a mass grave in the Sbeineh area in the rural outskirts of Damascus.

At the end of December 2024, the U.S.-based Syrian Emergency Task Force announced the discovery of a mass grave containing at least 100,000 bodies near the Syrian capital, Damascus, allegedly killed by the regime of Bashar al-Assad, now ousted.
