Kurdish leaders welcome Öcalan’s call for peace, disarmament

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Prominent Kurdish leaders voiced on Thursday their support for Abdullah Öcalan’s recent call for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to lay down arms and dissolve itself, viewing it as a crucial opportunity to establish long-term peace and stability in the region.

General Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), described the announcement as a “historic declaration” that could pave the way for a peaceful political process in Turkey.

“This is an opportunity to build peace and establish constructive and stable relations in the region,” Abdi stated.

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani also emphasized the importance of dialogue, calling peace “the only correct path to resolving disputes.”

In a statement, he expressed hope that “Öcalan’s message will mark the beginning of a renewed peace process that serves the interests of all parties involved.”

Similarly, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Öcalan’s call, describing it as an “important step toward peace and a peaceful resolution in the region.”

He reiterated the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) full support for the peace process and affirmed its readiness to contribute to its success.

As Kurdish leaders rally behind Öcalan’s statement, the focus now shifts to how regional and international actors will respond to this potential turning point in the long-standing conflict.
