General Security forces launch security operations in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The General Security forces launched on Thursday a security campaign targeting former regime affiliates and drug traffickers in the northern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.
According to a local source, over 150 General Security personnel assembled in the city of Jassem before moving towards the towns of Namar and al-Harra to launch the operation. The campaign specifically targeted remnants of the former regime and drug networks.
The source added that the operation also aimed to confiscate weapons held by former opposition militants and members of the local population.
The targeted villages had previously been surrounded by numerous military outposts of the former regime and had seen a significant Iranian presence in past years, the source explained.
Following the withdrawal of regime forces during the government’s collapse, local residents entered abandoned military posts and seized large quantities of small arms and artillery shells, the sources noted.
The General Security forces carry out similar campaigns on a near-weekly basis across Daraa’s cities and villages. However, according to the same source, many residents have so far refused to surrender their weapons.
