15 million Syrians at risk due to unexploded ordnance in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The non-governmental organization Handicap International reported on Wednesday that 15 million Syrians, two-thirds of the population, are at risk due to 100,000 to 300,000 unexploded ordnance scattered across the country.
Danila Zizi, the organization’s Syria program manager, described the situation as a “disaster.”
She emphasized that between 100,000 and 300,000 unexploded munitions remain, posing a direct threat of death or injury to two-thirds of the population.
In an interview with AFP, Zizi highlighted that many unconventional weapons, including barrel bombs, have been used, and that the Islamic State (ISIS) has planted mines in several areas, further endangering civilians.
She warned that more than 15 million people are at risk.
Handicap International also reported a sharp rise in incidents involving unexploded ordnance and explosive remnants of war, recording 136 incidents in the first two months of 2025 alone.
