DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched a plan to raise $370.9 million to support the return of Syrian refugees from neighboring countries and assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Syria.

The initiative aims to address the ongoing crisis affecting Syrian refugees and IDPs, ensuring suitable conditions for their voluntary and safe return following political developments in Syria after the fall of the former government late last year.

Targeted Assistance

The plan seeks to support 1.5 million Syrian refugees willing to return from neighboring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt, while also aiding approximately 2 million IDPs within Syria.

According to UNHCR, the funds will cover repatriation costs from host countries, with allocations including $90.2 million for Turkey, $76.9 million for Lebanon, $22 million for Jordan, $3.9 million for Egypt, and $920,000 for Iraq.

Inside Syria: Rebuilding Lives

A total of $81.4 million will be dedicated to supporting returnees within Syria, covering financial aid and protection services. Additionally, $40 million is set aside for shelter programs, while $55 million will be used for community reintegration efforts.

The plan also includes rehabilitating infrastructure in return areas, such as schools and healthcare centers, ensuring the provision of essential services for returnees.

Despite the funding initiative, challenges remain regarding the long-term stability of returnees and the effectiveness of reintegration programs amid ongoing security and economic difficulties in Syria.
