UN Envoy Welcomes Dialogue Between New Syrian Authorities and Kurdish-led SDF

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed support on Wednesday for opening communication channels between Syria’s new leadership and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), highlighting the need for inclusivity in the country’s transitional phase.
Speaking during a UN Security Council session on Syria, Pedersen cautioned against external actors exploiting Syria’s current state of political and security fragmentation.
Call for Inclusive Governance
Pedersen emphasized that Syrians are closely watching whether the new administration’s commitments will translate into concrete actions, particularly in ensuring diverse representation within the government.
“President Ahmad al-Sharaa has pledged to form an inclusive transitional government that respects Syria’s demographic diversity. The new authorities have made several commitments—the key now is implementation,” Pedersen said.
He also welcomed the initiative to establish dialogue between the new Syrian leadership and the SDF, acknowledging that security challenges remain in several parts of the country.
“The security situation in Syria is complex. There are concerns that foreign actors could exploit the current fragmentation and weakness for their own agendas,” he added.
Concerns Over Human Rights Violations
During the session, Pedersen noted reports of human rights violations by security forces in some areas of Syria.
While he did not provide specific details, his remarks reflect ongoing concerns within the international community about maintaining stability, protecting human rights, and ensuring accountability during the transition period.
The Path to Transitional Justice
The UN envoy underlined the importance of transitional justice mechanisms to address past human rights violations and prevent new abuses.
“The new administration must provide assurances through a comprehensive transitional justice framework,” he stressed.
