Austria initiates revoking asylum status of about 2,400 Syrian refugees
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Austrian Ministry of the Interior announced on Friday the initiation of procedures to revoke the asylum status of roughly 2,400 Syrian refugees.
In an official statement, the ministry clarified that while new asylum applications from Syrian nationals will still be registered, they will not be processed under the current policy.
Since the announcement, approximately 80 Syrian refugees have voluntarily left Austria, according to ministry officials.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner introduced the new policy, which not only suspends the processing of new asylum requests but also outlines plans for the deportation or voluntary return of those already granted asylum.
This policy shift is reflected in the significant drop in applications. Data from the Austrian news agency indicates that Syrian asylum applications in January declined by 55 percent compared to the same in 2024.
