Women’s conference in Qamishli calls for political role in new Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Feminist movements in the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria, organized on Tuesday a women’s conference to advocate for greater political participation of women in the future of Syria.
The event was spearheaded by the Peace She-Leaders Network and the Şawîşka Association, with support from the International League of Women for Peace and Freedom. It brought together 30 women from various regions across northeastern Syria.
Discussions focused on advancing the political process, the UN’s role in the Syrian conflict, increasing women’s political participation, and shaping Syria’s future.
Suhaila Soufi, a coordinator with Peace She-Leaders Network, told North Press, “This conference seeks to establish a stronger role for women in the political process, particularly given their exclusion in many parts of Syria.”
She emphasized that women must have the right to participate in shaping the country’s future and making key political decisions.
Soufi also noted that a follow-up conference will be held in Damascus, where discussions, conclusions, and decisions from this gathering will be compiled into a statement and formally presented.
Georgette Barsoum, head of the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria, highlighted the significance of ensuring women’s representation in the new Syria.
“Our struggle persists and has only intensified. We demand rights not just for women in northeastern Syria but for all women across Syria, ensuring their presence in all government institutions,” she told North Press.
